HILO, Hawaii — Construction of one of the world's largest telescopes is being delayed because of blizzard conditions on a Hawaii mountain summit.
The Thirty Meter Telescope will be built near the summit of Mauna Kea. Telescope spokeswoman Sandra Dawson tells Hilo newspaper Hawaii Tribune-Herald (http://ow.ly/Kae0Z) that construction preparations would be getting underway if it wasn't for the winter storm.
The Mauna Kea access road was closed Monday because of snow and wind. Mauna Kea Weather Center Meteorologist Ryan Lyman says conditions may clear enough for the road to reopen Friday or during the weekend.
Dawson says when construction can begin will depend on when the weather clears.
The telescope should help scientists see some 13 billion light years away for a glimpse into the early years of the universe.
